Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) was an artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
德加為法國偉大的浪漫主義畫家，色彩使用深刻影響印象主義及後印象主義，創作的靈感大皆來自史學上及當代的文學作品。從旅遊於英國及北非後，外地的文化衝擊，更具體化他的浪漫理念。
德加中學畢業，同年來到了義大利，在那裡的一所美術學校學習。1854 - 59年在義大利的美術學校學習義大利的藝術，特別是文藝復興時期的藝術。同時，他又在安格爾的一位得意門生路易‧拉莫特（LouisLamott）的畫室裡學畫。
1859 年回到了巴黎，那時的德加已經是一個學到一手讓-奧古斯特‧多明尼克‧安格爾（Jean-SugusteDominiqueIngres,1780-1867）畫派好手法的、功夫很深的素描行家了。
這種素描是一種古典主義的素描，1859 年前經常畫一些人物肖像，如：他的家人、他的朋友以及一些歷史主題的人物。1860 年代結識了愛德華‧馬奈（EdwardManet,1832-1883），並成為蓋爾布來咖啡館的常客。
1869 年畫了大量色粉習作，主要畫的是海濱浴場。1870 年代初期芭蕾舞女是德加非常喜歡的主題，之後創作風格開始轉向了現實主義。這種理論主張放棄古代希臘的美的理想，而代之以樸實、真摯地表現所見的事物。
